Our fish are the Amazon butterfly peacock bass which get only about 10 lbs. at the biggest. South Florida is the only place in the United States where these species can be caught. We've had three guided trips this month and all were fairly successful landing a few close to 5 lbs. So if the Brazil trip is unaffordable for Peacock Bass consider South Florida to catch these unique species. Our water levels have dropped from all the summer rains and are now cooling off which should increase the fish activity. We had two guided trips and they were quite productive. Each trip we used mostly shiners and jigs. The peacock bass usually run a little larger this time of year. I've seen quite a few large males swimming with females already. The water temperatures in the high 70's usually mean great fishing and spawning. It's great to see these big fish still swimming shallow in these canals. We were out over on the southwest Florida coast last week to try tarpon fishing for the first time. I know this has nothing to do with amazon peacock bass fishing but I had to share this adventure with my readers. My first tarpon weighed 160 lbs. and took my 45 minutes to land this beast. If you can't make it to the Amazon in Brazil to catch the mighty Peacock Bass I think South Florida can fill in the need to catch BIG FISH! Today Lowell Shapley from Houston, Texas found out how wonderful these great fish can be. The butterfly peacock bass can be only found in South Florida or Brazil. Lowell and I landed 35 peacocks today up to 5 lbs. This beauty was caught on a jig and we also used some live shiners. How about 10 to 20 per day per angler? Well South Florida doesn't have them that size, but we do have is a great Peacock Bass fishery in Miami. Brazil fishing from March through August is usually slow because of high water. As water levels drop the fish are flushed out of the flooded jungle and become easier to target south in the Rio Madeira river. Then as the season progresses the camps and yachts move north into Rio Negro and it's tributaries. But in the mean time South Florida Peacock Bass fishing has been great and getting better each day. Today Hugh and Ruth Spegiel were out fishing with us and boated 38 peacock bass to 4 lbs. Thursday we're heading back to try for more great Miami fishing!

Capt. Our season is heating up with two guide trips this week boating 44 peacocks up to 5 1/4 lbs. Jim Reed who has fished with us now 4 times got the big one this week. Miami peacock bass fishing is the only place in the continental United States to catch peacock bass. So until the Amazon fishing picks up in August if the water levels are good in the Rio Madeira river, give South Florida peacock bass fishing a try. These butterfly peacock bass get up to 6 or 7 lbs. on a regular basis. Peacock bass fishing in the Amazon usually lasts about 9 months from July through March before the heavy rains spread the fish through out the jungle making the fishing impossible. Peacock Bass fishing is solely dependant upon low water levels that don't flood the jungle. Make sure while shopping around for outfitters your agent fully explains what may take place. In many instances you'll be offered to reschedule your trip which will make a much more pleasurable fish catching experience. Your better agents and outfitters are looking to please peacock bass fisherman on their first experience in the Amazon. My first trip to Brazil was quite enjoyable but the fishing was lousy but I didn't have to pay for the trip either. A full paying customer would be highly disappointed at the experience as far as the fishing was concerned. My outfitting company was so good that they offered me an all expense paid trip again, the problem is the airfare isn't cheap! But if that's all I have to pay I consider that a bargain! Just remember to discuss these situational problems with your agent/outfitter before booking to fully understand the fishing conditions for the times of year your considering traveling to the Amazon. Then you'll be aware and will probably come back year after year to enjoy the awesome power of the Amazon Peacock Bass. The best time to fish Brazil is from October 1 st. through March 30 th. This is the dry season in the Amazon river tributaries which lasts about 6 months. After the rainy season starts the rivers and tributaries flood and the Peacock Bass move to far into the flooded jungle to provide any good fishing. This process repeats itself year after year similar to the South Florida Everglades system and largemouth bass. It was a great experience. The food, service and hospitality of the people was wonderful. We fished for a week and the fishing was a little slow with only 40 Peacock Bass caught up to 16 lbs. The following week was much better with 2 Peacocks caught over 20 lbs and many between 10 and 20 lbs. Peacock Bass are probably the hardest fighting freshwater fish that swim! Most Peacocks are caught with topwater propeller type lures which can really excite the heart rate. Jigs and minnow type jerkbaits are also effective along with fly fishing techniques. But before I left I had to visit the Florida Everglades one more time to see if the largemouth bass were still biting. We did quite well considering the water levels are still up slightly. I'll be posting the peacock bass reports on the Amazon river on Sept 30, with all the great fishing. These pictures can be seen also at the above website when I return. As far as the size fish we caught I was quite happy. We boated in half-day of fishing 8 bass up to 6 lbs. with a total of 24 lbs. with our best 5 fish. The peacock bass and largemouth bass will continue to be good as long as the hurricane rainy season stays dry like it's been. We were out today for a few hours trying to cope with the heat but happened to land 6 bass up to 5 lbs. in the South Florida Everglades. Most of these fish were caught on top with homemade lures that I make. The peacock bass fishing is also o'kay if you covers water quickly. They school up this time of year and swim around alot so move fast and find the concentrations of fish. I've received a report last week that many fish were caught up to 15 lbs. Now that will give you sore arms! We are expecting with the water levels dropping over the next few weeks the fishing to be awesome. I'm hoping for a few over 20 lbs., wishful thinking.
Can you imagine catching fish that big mostly on topwater! I'm not sure my heart can handle that.
